Summer Newsletter

Welcome,

We’ve been enjoying the long lazy days here in Scotland  and with them the chance to catch up on great books and creative projects. How about moving your desk to a window? Or sitting outside to write and read? Make the most of the  rest of summer while developing your creative practice...

WHAT WE’VE BEEN READING:

The Happy Writing Book, by Elise Valmorbida

Inspiring short essays on the importance of creativity and writing to our sense of well being by an award-winning writer and experienced writing teacher.

Happening, by Annie Ernaux

A timely, beautifully written, haunting, autobiographical novel about a young woman seeking an abortion in France in 1963.

Lost Lake, by Mark Slouka

Precise, lyrical evocations of place and the quiet lives of a lakeside community.

Law of Dreams, by Peter Behrens

This Canadian author's early novel ( which is indeed a dream) prefigures a rich and creative literary project including collaborations with other writers and artists.

WHAT’S GOT US THINKING:

We’ve been wanting to ask the question: Where are the lost poems of the Highlands? Keep an eye on the Dornoch Bookshop in Sutherland for Wordpath writing events that will help you uncover writing that you may already have in hand!

WHAT WE’VE BEEN UP TO LATELY:

Notting Hill Editions Author Profile: Kirsty Gunn

Kirsty Gunn writes short stories, novels and essays. She also directs and teaches, with novelist Meaghan Delahunt, WordPath Scotland, an online weekend creative writing programme. Gunn is the recipient of several awards and prizes including the Scottish Arts Council Bursary for Literature, the New York Times Notable Book award, and the Sundial Scottish Arts Council Book of the Year.

In her lyrical essay, My Katherine Mansfield ProjectGunn explores the ideas of home and belonging — and of her own deep connection to a place where every flower and gatepost seems embroidered with the memory of some story or another.

Of Mutual Things

We’ve gone along to Dr Neil’s Garden to see the fabulous pastel drawings of Brigid Collins that are themselves in conversation with poems by Christine de Lucca.
